How to Bluff in Poker
Bluffs are often overused by rookies and beginning players. These players will often throw large bets on very weak hands and hope that they will win. It may work around a table of players that you do not know, but once enough information is gathered about you, many of your bluffs will not work.
Bluffs can be used in almost any situation and on any hand in poker, though they do become more and less useful in certain circumstances. The bluff is best practiced by staying spontaneous and not over-using it.
Texas Hold 'Em Bluffing
When there are not a lot of players in a pot and you believe you can steal a hand from a conservative player. In this case, the tight player likely will not want to match a very large bet unless they have a very good care in their hand.
Also, then the table is generally filled with tight players bluffing is more effective. Bluffing may not work with a lot of loose players because these players tend to play in a majority of hands anyway. Their average or below average hand might be good enough to beat the weak hand that you are bluffing on.
Bluffing on the River
Another popular and useful time to bluff is on the river card. Before or after the river, you can throw a large bet on the table and attempt to get the other players to believe that you are sitting on a good hand or that you have just drawn the card that completed your good hand.
